MAGIC EXPLAINED
RESONANCE
The world breathes. Few are born to feel it.
Beneath the soil, beneath the rivers, beneath the mountains, a current runs through everything. Scholars call it the Resonance: a lifeforce that turns the seasons, weighs the rain, and binds living things one to another. Most never feel it. They walk and work and die above it without ever knowing it carried them.
Some are different. They are born with the gift to sense its flows; to feel the threads stretch and slacken, to hear or see or taste the world’s quiet music. These are the bearers. Trained, they become wielders: hands
that can draw the Resonance, store it, and shape it into healing, into walls of light, into barriers and crossings between distant places.
But the world is wrong. The Resonance is fading. Whole regions have gone silent: rivers that no longer run, fields that turn to dust, lands where no current stirs at all. The Empire watches its borders contract and tightens its grip on those who can still touch the flows. The gift was rare before. It is rarer now. And every year, fewer children draw the obsidian stone.

THE TESTING
BEARERS
Those who drew an Obsidian
When the imperial guards return to a village, every man and woman who has come of age since their last visit must answer the call. They set the Bowl of the Resonance before the gathered villagers and read the names. One by one, the youths step forward and place a hand into the silver liquid. Its surface shimmers; beneath it, the bowl holds an endless depth. Most who reach in draw nothing. The rare few draw a small black stone, an obsidian.
Drawing nothing means a life unchanged: a homecoming, a return to the field or the forge. Drawing the stone means the gift. The bearer is taken from their parents and led to the capital, where the eight great Houses will test them, and one of them, perhaps, will claim them.
There is no refusing the Bowl. There is no refusing the Empire. What one sees inside the water is forbidden to speak of.

PERCEIVING
THE FIVE SENSE
No two bearers experience the Resonance the same way. The flows reach each person through one of the five senses. The way a bearer perceives the flows shapes their path, and may decide which House may claim them.

SIGHT
Those who see the Resonance perceive the world threaded with colour and light. The flows appear as moving currents, shifting through walls, through bodies, through the earth itself. A Blade might see the flows as a faint shimmer at the edge of things. A Wayfinder sees further, the great crossing-nodes hundreds of miles away, bright and fixed as stars. A Healer sees not distance but depth, beneath a wound, the thread that has snapped, the current that no longer moves.

SOUND
To some the Resonance comes as music. A deep, shifting chord beneath all other sounds. It rises in places where the flows are strong and fades where they are thin. These bearers often feel the wrongness before they understand it: a note gone flat, a silence where there should be sound.

SMELL
The flows leave a residue on the air. For these bearers, every wielder leaves a trace, a scent that lingers after Resonance has been used. They can track a wielder through a crowded city hours after the flows were released. They smell the difference between a place where Resonance runs freely and one where it is fading, and more.

TASTE
Perhaps the strangest perception. These bearers taste the Resonance on the tongue, a flavour that has nothing to do with food, shifting with the emotional and physical state of those around them. A military leader with this gift might taste the fear of her soldiers before they speak it. She knows, even before the words come, when she has been lied to.

TOUCH
The flows as texture. Fine as silk when the current is gentle, coarse and sharp when it is disturbed. A healer who perceives through touch can lay a hand on a body and feel not only the wound but the whole pattern of flows beneath it.

THE BONDING
WIELDERS
Sensing the flows is one thing. Shaping them is another.
After a bearer has proven themselves to their House and mastered the basics of the Resonance, they are permitted to attempt the ritual known as the Bonding. After a bearer has proven themselves to their House and mastered the basics of the Resonance, they are permitted to attempt the ritual known as the Bonding. They enter the Great Pyramid alone. Inside they choose a weapon: a blade, a staff, a bow, whatever shape calls to them, all forged of harmonite, the living black ore.
Should they fail, death meets them. Should they succeed, they walk out a wielder.
The bonded weapon recognises only one master. It cannot be lost. It cannot be stolen. When dismissed, it returns to the Resonance; when summoned, it answers. Through it the wielder draws the flows more keenly, holds them longer, and releases them more easily.

MASTERY OF RESONANCE
THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS
Every wielder of every House learns the same four pillars:

PERCEIVING
Sensing the flows through one of the five sense. Without perception, nothing else is possible.

DRAWING
Pulling the Resonance from the world into the wielder's own pool. A wielder does not create the Resonance; they draw it, slowly and steadily, from everything around them.

STORING
Holding the drawn flows within until the moment of release. A young wielder carries very little. A master can hold enough to make wonders.

RELEASING
Shaping and directing the stored flows toward an intended effect. This is where Houses differ. A Blade releases to sharpen a strike. A Shield weaes a barrier. A Healer mends. A Wayfinder folds distance. The flows are the same. What each House does with them is not.
